Searching While Naming Tip

1st tip. while your adding in name ideas for a business/product, have 2 or 3 separate sites up in separate browsers or tabs on your browser. One site of course is yahoo or google, a 2nd site would be the USPTO's TESS search system, a 3rd site would be a domain search site. Be careful which domain search site you use, because there are a couple of them out there now that can legally reserve a searched for domain name for up to 4 days just because you searched for it on their site. This could be a problem if one of our clients wanted to register a matching domain name right away for their business or product.

Use the links to the right for quick convenient searching and developing.

Giving some thought while coming up with name ideas

Some of the best company and product names came from no thought at all while coming up with the name, but most of the great names today took thought and time. Try to think of the business/product as a whole and try to invision that this business/product is well known throughout the world some years from now and it's well known name is:???

Think Verbal, Visual, and Perceptual Meaning

Verbal, Visual, and Perceptual Meaning are like name filters.
1st filter: How does the name sound?
second filter: How does the name look?
3rd filter: From the sound and the look, what is the perceptual meaning of the name word?

To understand more about Verbal, Visual, and Perceptual Meaning, see our learning section.

Coining Names

It's really easy to come up with some coined name ideas. Just take 2 different words that are somehow descriptive of the business/product and find a way to fuse them together to be one word. Order doesn't usually matter. If one or both of the words just don't sound that great and don't sound very good at all when fused together, use a thesaurus to get the synonyms for the word or words, then try fusing them together in different orders to make one name word. This should definitely give you a few name ideas.

Is the domain available .com .net .org .us

In the reasoning input box while your adding in name ideas, inform the client about whether the .com matching domain name for your name idea is available or not. If not, which domain is? .net .org .us etc.. This isn't mandatory, but really saves the client some time and makes them just that little bit happier with your name idea. Also keep in mind that getting a matching domain name for a name idea is getting tougher everyday, but maybe a slightly expanded domain name that nearly matches your name idea would work. For example: Enginame.com is taken, but EnginameNaming.com is available.

Easy come name ideas

As we mentioned earlier, some of the best names really do just come in a flash right away in an idea, don't hesitate to enter it in. It may be the quickest money you ever made. And remember that even some name words that may seem to not be so great, end up being really great after thinking about it. We like to use the yahoo example here: yahoo means repulsive bum, but if you think about it really, it also means someone is having a lot of fun and yelling yahoo!. It ended up being a really great name. So don't hesitate to enter in a seemingly bad name, it will be filtered out eventually if it really is a bad name, or may come up to the very top and surprise you.
